I love visiting amazing design blogs, like Open House, and sharing ideas. I'm a huge fan of Open House's posts on Etsy finds and wish I lived closer to Richmond to stop by the store. I'm thrilled to be here guest blogging today about autumn interior designs and accents. Falling for fall is easy for me; it's my favorite season. I've pulled together some great ideas for autumn inspired interiors. Enjoy!

Falling for autumn is all about celebrating nature's golden season. Bringing the outdoors inside, through colors, patterns and textures is the best way to create autumn accents for your home.

To highlight the lovely fall foliage, add warm gold to your décor. Warm metallics like bronze, copper and rose gold are also good choices for metallics for autumn.

Adding velvet's and knits to your décor is a sure way to fall for autumn decorating. A thick cable knit throw is so cozy for a favorite reading chair, sofa or bed. Adds such great texture too!

Fall for autumn's glorious rich colors by adding accents of curtains and runners to your dining room. Swapping out summer sheers for rich velvet's makes a big difference. Love the plum color.

Autumn decorating ideas inspired by nature need not all be riots of foliage colors. Creams and browns are great colors for autumn accents. Look for natural elements that have great shape and texture for interest.

Create a harvest vignette in the entry or dining room. This group features a sunflower head (so sculptural) and beautiful earth toned pottery. The potted herb adds a little Tuscan or Napa style.

Find creative ways to incorporate fall colors into your décor. So many clever DIY ideas out there on blogs can help you get started.

Oilcloth Addict, a local Richmond crafter that we love, is releasing a book! it's called Sewing with Oilcloth and it's a cute little book with 20 patterns and pictures of designs to make with oilcloth, laminated cotton, and chalk cloth. there are also lots of tips, tools, and trims that make sewing fun and easy! it is being officially released on August 28th at a book signing and release party being held at feathernesters from 3-5pm. but if you can't make it to the release party, don't fret– you can still purchase the book. you can pre-order it at amazon, books-a-million, barnes & noble, indie bound, and wiley. these pre-orders are due to be shipped in two weeks as well.

while wandering through etsy today, I came across this bowl. It comes from a shop called the untrained eye. they sell all sorts of adorable kids tableware, as well as jewelry and a few other things. everything is hand-made and unique, so no two pieces look the same. i love this bowl in particular because of the elephant and the beautiful teal color that is so perfect for summer.

farmers markets are not just for farmers

being sustainable is becoming a huge trend all across the us, including here in richmond. people are learning to grow their own food and planting gardens (both privately and as a community) that will provide food to help sustain them. some of my favorite things to grow are herbs (especially basil, yum!). and if you're like me, sometimes you get confused which pot has which herb, particuarly when you have just planted the seeds. so to curb the confusion, consider our ceramic herb markers by famed ceramicist Rae Dunn. they are so adorable and add charm to any pot. we also have super cute wood grain herb planters also by Rae Dunn, that are perfect for planting your herbs in.

also, as i'm sure you've seen and heard, farmers markets are not just for farmers or hippies anymore. these wonderful places are appealing to anyone who is looking for fresh food at relatively low prices. people bring their home grown produce and other goodies usually once a week and sell to people who come for all over just for some good, fresh food. there are so many in richmond this year, and you can find a different one for pretty much every day of the week. you can check out where they all are and when they are open here. last weekend, katie visited the South of the James Market and snapped these awesome photos you see here :)
so if you're interested in farmers markets, you should definitely check them out around town. you should also check out our John Robshaw totes, that are perfect for taking to the market (show up in eco-friendly style), and our vases, by Karin Eriksson and Rae Dunn, that are prefect for putting fresh market flowers in.

i hope you start your summer off right with some freshness from your garden or a farmers market :)

boxes are arriving in the shop everyday now...full of lots of spring goodies.
yesterday we were so excited to open these porcelain bud vases from
rae dunn for magenta. we had seen them in NYC back in january and
just couldn't wait to get them in. i'm in love with matte finish on the outside
and the shiny glazed interior. and the doodles and text are just so charmingly
rae dunn! they stand on their own quite well, but i'm totally seeing a small
spring bouquet peeking out of mine! happy shopping! k&m

shop. they were such a big hit and now we've added some cute new
designs...tutus, doggy bag and "apple". we've got lots more of the popular
"on my way to eat a salad" and "lunch" totes as well!

each tote is made from 100% certified organic cotton with water-based
inks and are totally machine washable. the liners are BPA free and rinseable.

well, almost just in! we're so excited to get our new polka-dot travel mugs in that we just had to post about them today. as a tea drinker, i'm constantly annoyed that every aluminum-lined travel mug in our house tastes like my husband's coffee! but now i'll have my own double-walled porcelain mug. topped with a silicone lid that looks just like the plastic ones, these are microwave and dishwasher safe and just adorable. we've got two sizes, 9 ounce and 11 and a variety of fun colors. in store and online starting Tuesday!!! happy shopping1 k&m

a new order of beautea liquid hand soaps in Black Ceylon Pekoe
Tea and White Darjeeling Tea. they didn't stay in stock long last time,
so get them while you can.

we're also introducing a new line of bath products to the shop.
earthworks is the creation of Corinne Able and we're super excited
to carry the line. her products are beautiful on the outside as well
as inside: paraben-free, not tested on animals and packaged
in recyclable containers. we've just received a shipment of handmade
bath truffles in 7 yummy scents along with hand-wrapped bar soap
that is just lovely. both should be online and in-store this week.

great new soaps from local ricgmonder, Jackson Sage. we're so
excited to have Erika's handcrafted, yummy smelling, beautifully
packaged soaps in store and online. look for them to appear this
weekend.

a little bit about them: the soaps are handmade using the cold-process
method. each bar contains natural oils, butters, herbs, clay, and pure
essential oils. each one is hand stamped and imperfections are left to
leave traces of the hand. all soaps are pH tested to ensure mildness.

at $6.50 a piece, they make for a wonderful hostess gift or a treat for yourself!

a hot and busy august we're back on the blog circuit and catching up for lost

we're loving these flash cards from etsy seller Sparkle + Sketch.
made from photos taken of objects around her home, the images
are mounted on thick acid-free board and then varnished with
a non-toxic AP. the colors and photos are just lovely. little lj is a
tad too young for them, but what a great gift for a 1 or 2 year
old. and at $26 for a set of 10, beautifully boxed, you can't beat it.
choose from a variety of images and words or send her some of
your own ideas.

hey folks! sorry it's been so long since we've posted. babies, work, shop, life...it all seemed to get in the way :o)

wanted to point out a couple of openhouse mentions lately. first, a really beautiful blog called sweetlovelyafternoon highlighted our perch! chloe vessel (probly my favorite thing in store right now). she's taking a break for the rest of the summer, but bookmark it and check back in the fall. i think her mission and style is just sweet and lovely.

last, but CERTAINLY not least, we got a great little write up in the design*sponge RVA guide. thanks to locals kelly brown and leslie kingery for the props! we are in good company. and thanks to the internet, folks don't need to come to town to see us, just hop over to the virtual shop and enjoy some SERIOUS summer sales going on.

we'd like to introduce you to a great new designer at openhouse: pacific & rose. based in Orange, California, Elizabeth James creates beautiful textiles that she has hand block-printed outside of Jaipur, India. employing age-old techniques, each design comes to life by block carvers, colour master, block printers and seamstresses.

we're happy to carry some AMAZING prints in tea towels, oven mitts, table runners and napkins. come by the shop to see them in person or check out a small selection online.

i can tell you from firsthand knowledge (after purchasing some tea towels over the holidays) that the great design is matched by great quality. The towels wash well and really stand up to anything in the kitchen. nice to find a product that is not only nice to have out but also tough!

we just got a huge new shipment of blabla today! a few new dolls we haven't had before and some blankets, mobiles and rattles as well. all handmade (of course) and beautiful. i can tell you from experience that the handknit blankets are perfect for baby. lightweight, soft and too cute. we have them in pink/orange and blue/green and the new bird rattles we have are a hit with the under 6 month crowd. pick up one or a couple today :o)

i'm sure i'm seriously late in posting these great little porcelain bits from my favorite etsy girl, ashleyg.

i have one of her "bearded men" prints in the nursery. it's supposed to be representative of my bearded husband, but most people think it looks like Bin Laden ;o)

anyway, she has some miniature porcelain pieces with illustrations imprinted onto the surface. hang a bunch on a wall for instant wow! or be bold and wear it around your neck! I might just hammer a small nail in the wall in an offbeat place in my house and put it there. whatever you choose to do with it, i think they are just precious. enjoy! and happy shopping!

so i've decided to quit whining about domino folding. i've grieved and i'm ready to move on. so, i was happy to read on maison luxe that you can choose which magazine you would like to receive for the remainder of your subscription. the default is apparently architectural digest...not one that tickles my fancy. so make sure you check out this link: Conde Nast, and call to make sure you get what you want. personally, i've gone with extending my cookie subscription. i highly recommend if you haven't read it ;o) and bon apppetit is another good option. i recently subscribed after years of not picking it up and it's a great read if you like food and wine and travel. and who doesn't! enjoy and happy shopping! k&m

for years i've imagined having a large antique farm table in the dining room with white or black panton chairs. i love the juxtaposition of form-molded plastic with the natural, heavy wood. i'm always looking around online for a good deal (almost impossible to find). $250 per chair is just not recession friendly. as i was browsing i came across the most interesting place i'd ever found my lovely chairs: church. and since it was sunday, i thought it fitting to post these fabulous pictures from St Bartholomew’s church in Chodovice, Czech Republic. i love the old and the new together like that! how divine ;o) k&m

thanks to cool mom picks, i came across kiki & polly, a fabulous, alternative option for kid and family portraits. ever since LJ arrived, i've been thinking about starting an art collection for her. finding one work a year that represent ceratin milestones in her life or ours as a family. i've commissioned her first work that i'll share soon when it's ready. but these delicate line portraits might be the winner for next year. i love how the faces are left blank and that only certain objects are filled in with color. just lovely.

an interesting booth caught our eye at the ivy market a couple weeks back. lorcom lane design, a local richmond collaborative, was selling some stunning handmade items. napkins, runners, coasters, pillows and blankets lined their booth. all beautifully constructed with exciting patterns that you don't usually see. we're hoping that we'll have a chance in the future to highlight them in the shop, but until then, visit their etsy site to see more. perfect gifts for the holidays. enjoy! k&m

[the winner! amy coe westport crib for babies r us, $349]

summer is passing fast and we've been super busy with projects. we're getting the shop ready to roll for fall. we're putting together the basics for an openhouse website to be launch sometime in the near future (pretty specific, hunh?) we're prepping for some local fall shows and one of us has been working on a little baby due in october! since i've been on the lookout for all things baby and cool, i thought i'd share a couple of good finds. and we promise that as the cool air of fall, falls, we'll be back in action with the blog.

ideally the baby's room would be filled with high-end design made of environmentally friendly options. but we don't live in an ideal world and i've had to re-adjust the thought process. while maintaining a healthy, eco-friendly environment is numero uno importante (sorry, never took spanish) there have had to be some compromises.

the biggest was with the crib. the argington sahara, netto collection cribs and oeuf options were on the top of the list. they were also at the top of the price scale. so here are a couple of options that i found that make for great alternatives. they are made of wood, non-toxic and available in your local store, which makes their footprint a little less large. i'll be back next week with other great finds that we've stumbled across this summer. enjoy! and happy shopping! k&m
