etsy love...

you'll just have to bear with me. only 3 weeks left until the newest openhouse family member arrives and i just can't help having baby on the brain. came across these amazing blankets from the long thread on etsy. she primarily sells embroidery designs for machine embroidery, but these few blankets she has online are just insanely cute (and reasonable). for someone with no craft talent whatesoever, the finished product is what i'm looking for! enjoy! and happy shopping! k&m

hip cribs

[the winner! amy coe westport crib for babies r us, $349]

summer is passing fast and we've been super busy with projects. we're getting the shop ready to roll for fall. we're putting together the basics for an openhouse website to be launch sometime in the near future (pretty specific, hunh?) we're prepping for some local fall shows and one of us has been working on a little baby due in october! since i've been on the lookout for all things baby and cool, i thought i'd share a couple of good finds. and we promise that as the cool air of fall, falls, we'll be back in action with the blog.

ideally the baby's room would be filled with high-end design made of environmentally friendly options. but we don't live in an ideal world and i've had to re-adjust the thought process. while maintaining a healthy, eco-friendly environment is numero uno importante (sorry, never took spanish) there have had to be some compromises.

the biggest was with the crib. the argington sahara, netto collection cribs and oeuf options were on the top of the list. they were also at the top of the price scale. so here are a couple of options that i found that make for great alternatives. they are made of wood, non-toxic and available in your local store, which makes their footprint a little less large. i'll be back next week with other great finds that we've stumbled across this summer. enjoy! and happy shopping! k&m

bada-bing? you bet!

standing ovation for the richmond craft mafia. they managed to pull off a top-notch event yesterday down at plant zero. the 2008 spring bada-bing was everything they said it would be.

if you weren't able to make it down, i think you really missed out on one of those great moments. it might have been wet and gray outside, but inside it was bright and cheery and lively. the vendors were wonderfully varied and the quality of product on display showed the level to which craft has risen. there was so much to see i was actually a little overwhlemed. so much so that i missed a couple of booths i wanted to see! but it was a good overwhelmed. it made me so proud to be a richmonder and even prouder to be a part of the greater craft/design community.

literally everything there was great, but we did have a few favorites that we wanted to share:

like i said, it's just a handfull. we didn't even get to all the great jewelry. but you can see how much talent is out there. the good news is, if you missed the show yesterday, you can buy from these designers online. hopefully, in the near future, many of them will also be available at openhouse. so get out there and support local artists and designers as well as local businesses!!
enjoy! and happy shopping! k&m

beautiful new hand-made cards from richmond designer stacy moore. we're so excited to have her join our openhouse family and look forward to numerous collaborations in the future.

megan and i were really taken by the intricacy of each card. modern, clean-lined and yet full of pattern and texture and color. we have a number of great designs from iconic chairs to baby cards to florals and kitchen cards. great to go along with a baby gift or a wedding shower or just to say hi to a friend. how cute would the noodle bowl card look accompanied by our j. mendicino sushi set! i would love to get one of these in the mail and frame it. in fact, i might have to get the whole series of chairs and frame them for my dining room. i've taken some photos of a few of the cards (pardon my lack of photog skills). theywill be in the shop this afternoon and are $5-6 a piece.

enjoy! and happy shopping! k&m

bookhou design

i'd love to be writing this post introducing bookhou designs as the newest family member at openhouse...but we're still on the waiting list. in the meantime, i just couldn't wait to show you some great items that you can buy online right here in the meantime.

i love the simplicity of their designs. it all has a wonderful worn feeling to it. delicate, yet substanital at the same time. fingers crossed they start taking new wholesale accounts soon and we can get these to richmond! enjoy and happy shopping! k&m

we posted a sneak peek 2 weeks ago of some new designers coming to openhouse and they have arrived! we'd like to officially welcome blabla kids, susyjack* and virginia johnson to our family.

blabla kids is a wonderful company run by two atlanta women who use the age-old traditions of Peruvian knitters to create their adorable line of children's dolls, rattles, mobiles and finger puppets. a fair-trade company, blabla helps promote strong international relationships, improve the conditions for women in developing nations and creates heirloom quality gifts that promote sustainability. we're so excited to be a part of it.

susyjack* was a great etsy find. i was lazily "strolling the aisles" one day looking for a calendar for the new year when i came upon this talented woman. she is so inspirational in that she has talent, knew what to do with it and went for it in her business. everything openhouse strives to be ;o) her cards and journals and fun little decorative clips and pencil cups are just the whimsical touch openhouse needed. we aren't carrying her '08 calenders, but i suggest you pick one up at her etsy shop while you still can.

and lastly, but CERTAINLY not least, we introduce you to virginia johnson. virginia's designs hold a special place in my heart. she was really the first designer we stumbled across that made us think, why is there not a great place in richmond to find handmade, well-made, beautiful, contemporary items for the home? her textiles stole my heart and although she isn't doing a home line again in the foreseeable future, we did manage to nab a few (and i mean just a few) of her fabulous resort-line totes. perfect for that mid-winter trip you have planned (for real, or in your head like me) to st. barths or costa rica. large enough to hold everything you'll need for a day at the beach, these totes will have everyone wondering where you got them. these ain't no l.l. bean bags ;o)

enjoy! and happy shopping. k&m

enfant terrible

happy mlk day. hoping you are all enjoying the long weekend. i'm off to tackle a number of design projects around the house, but before i go, i wanted to post a site i've become quite a fan of.

enfant terrible is an adorable online children's shop that is so beautifully curated. even if you aren't looking for children's items, the site itself is a treat. reminds me of amelia bedelia or eloise books.

anyway, the
shop's philosophy is not unlike that of openhouse (if not more eloquently written ;o) quality over quantity, and sustainability. buying classic pieces that can be handed down and choosing great design over all of ticky tacky options out there.

enjoy! and happy shopping. k&m

trendy tots

megan and I have transitioned seamlessly from the wedding circuit to the baby circuit. everyone we know is decorating a nursery or upgrading from baby room to big kid room. seems like just yesterday we were shopping wedding registries for wine glasses and now it's baby registries for bottles. to be honest, we've been disappointed in our options. so when buying for openhouse, I believe we have inadvertently stocked a wonderful selection of baby and kid decor. we know there have to be moms and friends of moms out there who are looking for a more sophisticated way to decorate. something that can go from small to medium to large. a throw that works in baby's room as well as in the guest bedroom and pillows that can be fun and quirky at the same time as hip and stylish.

our mobiles from Frazier and Wing [5.5" x 28", $85] are a great alternative to the plastic variety. full of great colors, these decorative and whimsical mobiles are constructed using carefully selected imagery from recycled magazine pages. each mobile is a handmade labor of love taking up to eight hours to construct.

erich ginder's Ghost Antlers [$225] are just the right touch to any decor. e.e cummings said that "the most wasted of all days is one without laughter". i agree. and because of that i like to add a dash of humor to every room. what a great conversation piece if you had a few of these lined up in your entry way to take your guest's coats? or even better, have one of these hanging in a kids room for hats and little jackets. an excellent way to bring the great outdoors in. no deer were harmed in the making of this product...

apparently we love the children's plaid blankets [$250] above so much, we're mentioning them twice in a week. truly an heirloom addition to a baby or child's room. a nice gift alternative to a silver rattle :o)

[images above courtesy of frazier and wing, erich ginder and ratzer]

our selection of pillows are so much fun. all you need is one on a couch or kids bed to make a statement. our pillows [18 x 18, $78] from designer Jenny Sauer at three sheets 2 the wind remind me of drawings I did as a kid of stuff I found in nature. made from 100% linen and hand printed, one each on a set of twin beds would be too cute. her design philosophy embodies Wabi Sabi-- a Japanese aesthetic stressing unpretentiousness, earthiness and satisfaction with imperfection. if that doesn't describe a child-like mentality I don't know what does. Oh, why must we grow up?

and our K Studio pillows are just as cool. beautifully constructed, hand-made, and each one designed individually, they seem to capture the sense of daydream and wonder that only a kid can have. Prices range from $89-$170.

[images above courtesy of three sheets 2 the wind and k studio]

and lastly, some playful ceramics from j. mendicino would bring some sunshine to any baby's room. add a couple of Gerber daisies or twigs and you have instant art. add to that a set of twin sheets in pink or blue Samode, hand block printed and hand embroidered and you have a very sweet room for your very sweet little one. happy shopping! k&m

[images above courtesy of j.mendicino, prices ranging from $35-$55 for various sizes; john robshaw textiles, twin flat and fitted sheets each $120.]

onesies and gift cards, new from Sharon Spain

another fun box on our doorstep this afternoon, this time from Sharon Spain! we have loved her pillows and purses (as have you!) and now we get a chance to see something different from her. i know we're a home store, but these hand screen-printed onesies on organic cotton fabric were too cute to pass up. and best of all, your baby can match your pillows and your purse :o) at $22 each, you might as well get one in every color. sizes 3-6 months and 6-12 months in orange, green, blue and chocolate. we also nabbed a few of her beautifully screen-printed cards. each one is handmade (of course) and stitched onto craft paper with matching envelopes. buy a few to give as a gift or just one to send a note to a friend. we promise a smile on anyone who opens one of these little works of art. one card with envelope, $5. keep checking back in over the next week. we have a few more goodies on the way, including some new candle scents for the holidays, some coasters and sachets from Charlottesville artist Inleaf Designs, and some great features popping up in a richmond publication. happy shopping! k&m
